From the site: "Dozens of partygoers at an outdoor rave near Moscow have been partially blinded after a laser light show burned their retinas, say Russian health officials. Moscow city health department officials say that 12 cases of laser blindness were recorded at the Central Ophthalmological Clinic in the city. The daily newspaper Kommersant reports that another 17 victims have registered at another hospital in the centre of the capital. Ravers at the Aquamarine Open Air Festival in Kirzhach, 80 kilometres northeast of Moscow, began seeking medical help days after the show, complaining of eye and vision problems. "They all have retinal burns, scarring is visible on them. Loss of vision in individual cases is as high as 80%, and regaining it is already impossible," Kommersant quoted a treating ophthalmologist as saying." People don't realize the intensity of the laser beams used in concert laser shows. When I was a kid, I went to Epcott and happened to be standing by one of the buildings which housed a laser used during their nightly show. I loved watching the Florida bugs fly into the beam and get instantly vaporized. I don't want to think how unfortunate it would be to actually have that beam hit you in the eyes...

From the site: "The secret lives of invisible magnetic fields are revealed as chaotic ever-changing geometries . All action takes place around NASA's Space Sciences Laboratories, UC Berkeley, to recordings of space scientists describing their discoveries . Actual VLF audio recordings control the evolution of the fields as they delve into our inaudible surroundings, revealing recurrent `whistlers' produced by fleeting electrons . Are we observing a series of scientific experiments, the universe in flux, or a documentary of a fictional world?. Awarded Best Film at Cutting Edge at the British Animation Awards 2008. Awarded Best Experimental Film at Tirana International Film Festival 2007."

Don't listen to the voices! Microwave ray gun controls crowds with noise From the page: "A US company claims it is ready to build a microwave ray gun able to beam sounds directly into people's heads. The device - dubbed MEDUSA (Mob Excess Deterrent Using Silent Audio) - exploits the microwave audio effect, in which short microwave pulses rapidly heat tissue, causing a shockwave inside the skull that can be detected by the ears. A series of pulses can be transmitted to produce recognisable sounds. The device is aimed for military or crowd-control applications, but may have other uses. Lev Sadovnik of the Sierra Nevada Corporation in the US is working on the system, having started work on a US navy research contract. The navy's report states that the effect was shown to be effective."

Interesting Thing Of The Day (ITOD) website. Something interesting, every day. Check it out every once in a while. The featured article is on perfluorocarbons (PFCs), a liquid that you can breathe as an alternative to air. Those of you who saw the movie The Abyss may remember the liquid breathing suit or the scene where the rat was submerged in PFC which it breathed for a few minutes with no ill effects. Although as related to diving it may still be science fiction (or not; one never knows what the navy is doing), the medical benefits of these liquids are quite astounding. It is used successfully in hospitals to oxygenate prematurely born babies whose lungs have not yet developed. Read on...
